L / W

what are L and W?

L (loss) and W (win) are the internet's way of keeping score. originally from sports, they've become universal shorthand for judging... everything.

"massive L" = that was embarrassing "huge W" = that was impressive "L take" = bad opinion "W post" = great content

simple. effective. brutal.

how they're used

judging takes:

"social media is a waste of time" posted on social media reply: "L"

celebrating wins:

"just shipped my first feature" reply: "W developer"

evaluating life decisions:

"i quit my job to become a full-time shitposter" reply: this is either the biggest W or the biggest L and there's no in-between

the L/W economy

the internet has turned everything into a scoreboard. every decision, every take, every life update gets instantly sorted into L or W by the crowd.

this creates a weird pressure where people only share their Ws and hide their Ls, which makes everyone's feed look like a highlight reel of success. this is, in itself, an L.

L/W in content creation

understanding the scoring:

  • a post that ratio'd you: L
  • a post that went viral for the right reasons: W
  • deleting a post because it flopped: L
  • owning a post that flopped: somehow a W

strategic use: calling something an "L" or "W" in your content is shorthand your audience understands instantly. it adds judgment without needing to explain why.

the meta-L

the biggest L is caring too much about whether everything is an L or a W. sometimes things just are.

but saying that is also kind of an L because it sounds like something someone who just took an L would say.

the internet is exhausting.

put this knowledge to work

now that you know what L / W means, generate content that actually uses it right.
