what is engagement bait?
engagement bait is content designed to extract interactions the way a vending machine extracts quarters. it doesn't want to inform, entertain, or inspire. it wants your click, your comment, your share.
the post doesn't care about you. it cares about the algorithm.
the hall of shame
the false binary: "which side are you on? like for A, comment for B"
the impossible question: "can you name a city without the letter A? 99% can't!"
the guilt trip: "share if you love your mom, scroll if you don't care"
the vague concern: "some people need to hear this today..." (hear WHAT?)
the linkedin special: "agree? ♻️ repost"
why it works (technically)
platforms reward engagement. engagement bait generates engagement. therefore, engagement bait gets reach.
the logic is sound. the content is not.
why it actually doesn't work
short-term reach, long-term damage:
- audience quality tanks - you attract people who engage with everything, not people who care about your content
- credibility evaporates - your real audience sees what you're doing
- algorithmic trap - platforms are actively penalizing obvious engagement bait
- no compounding value - each bait post starts from zero. there's no momentum
engagement bait vs genuinely engaging content
bait: "what's your favorite color? drop it below!" engaging: "i've been designing for 10 years and i just learned i've been using blue wrong"
bait: "like if you agree!" engaging: [a take so good people like it because they actually agree]
bait: "tag someone who needs to see this" engaging: [content so good people tag others because they genuinely need to see it]
the difference: bait asks for engagement. good content earns it.
the only acceptable engagement bait
honestly? none. but if you're going to do it, at least be funny about it. "like this post or your code deploys on friday at 4pm" at least has personality.
